Grab a Fork Reading Plan | Week 3 | Day 5

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times.

In John 3:16 it says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Thank God for his love, his Son and for the gift of eternal life.

Bible Reading: Matthew 28:18-20

Today, we are going to read Jesus’ last words before He ascended to heaven. They are instructions to his disciples which are now our instructions, too. We are going to use the ‘Personalize It” method to meditate on it. This is taking a Scripture and substituting your name in for the pronouns. We will read it first as it is written:

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Now read the passage again using the prompt below, and wherever there is a blank, insert your name. Read this through at least two times:

Then Jesus came to ________ and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore ________ go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, ________. And surely I am with you, _______, always, to the very end of the age.”

Reflection & Questions

      1. As you inserted your name into this text, what struck out to you? Were there words or phrases you didn’t notice before?
      2. What’s God’s invitation to you in response to today’s reading?

Prayer

As we have been doing this week in our prayers, think about who you are going to come across today, at home, work, school, or in your neighborhood. As people come to mind, pray for them, and ask God what they need and listen to Him. Ask Him to give you opportunities to encourage them.
