Psalms Reading Plan | Day 4

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Thank God as you come to spend time with Him that He will never leave you nor forsake you. He is with you, always. You are never alone.

Bible Reading: Psalm 46

Read these verses three times slowly.

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Reflection & Questions

Today’s meditation method definitely requires grabbing some paper and something to write with. The Paraphrase It method helps you to meditate on scripture by rewriting it in your own words. The only instruction is that as you rewrite it don’t use the same words as are in the current translation (you may reuse simple words like “a” and “the”). Rewrite the following verses using the Paraphrase It method:

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

      1. As you rewrote the passage, were there words or phrases that particularly caught your attention? Why do you think?
      2. Were there words that were harder to rewrite? Why? Did you gain insight as you struggled to find a replacement?
      3. What is God’s invitation to you today in response to His word?

Prayer

Talk to God in response to today’s reading.
