Unstoppable Reading Plan | Week 3 | Day 4

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Ask God to give you His wisdom today.

Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 9:6-9

Read these verses three times slowly.

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever.”

Reflection & Questions

In our verses today and tomorrow, we are looking at Paul’s instructions to the Corinthian church regarding a gift they had promised to give to advance the mission and meet the needs in another church. There are several principles around generosity that Paul teaches:

• A giving life reaps a harvest. “Remember this,” Paul says. As they consider their gift, Paul wants them to remember the law written into the universe. You reap according to your sowing. He’s not saying that as you give that you will become wealthier. But in living a generous life, we will be living in the way the Designer designed you to live. Like we read on day 1 this week, if you want “the good life,” sow in generosity.
• A giving life is a thoughtful life. Paul doesn’t want the Corinthians to check their brains or their hearts at the door as they give. He wants them to put thought into what they will give, engaging their hearts and minds. Gifts that are “reluctant” or “under compulsion” aren’t God-honoring. God loves a gift that has a heart and mind fully engaged in joy.
• A giving life is watched over by the Heavenly Father. Ultimately, Paul says a life of generosity will be a life watched over by the Heavenly Father. He “is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” The generous don’t trust in their wealth, they trust in a Father who owns the universe and can provide everything they need.
