Ripple Effect Reading | Week 2 | Day 5
Prayer
As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you!
Bible Reading: Mark 9:33-35
Read these verses three times slowly.
They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
Reflection & Questions
As we close out this week looking at the importance of serving for the Christ-follower, we end with this wild story from Mark’s gospel. Noone likes having their dirty laundry aired to the world, but that’s what happens to the disciples here. They had been arguing. Not about finer points of theology. Not about who Jesus is. Nope. They had been arguing about which one of them was the greatest! Incredible. But before we go down the road of judgment, how often in our pride do we internally puff ourselves up and talk others down. We think we’re such a better ____________ than them (you fill in the blank). Imagine having those thoughts aired to the world.
Do you want to know who is truly great? “The servant of all,” Jesus says. Look around. Do you see that person serving? Do you see that person helping the poor? Do you see that person helping teach kids about Jesus? Do you see that person giving their time to help in Celebrate Recovery? How about the person you’ll never see – because they’re with the down and outs serving. If you want to see greatness, watch them! Then go do likewise.
- Why do we feel the need to build ourselves up in our minds and tear others down?
- Who is someone you know who is a humble servant? What can you learn from them?
