Mixtapes Reading | Week 1 | Day 5
Prayer
As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you!
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:17-24
Read these verses three times slowly.
Be good to your servant while I live,
that I may obey your word.
Open my eyes that I may see
wonderful things in your law.
I am a stranger on earth;
do not hide your commands from me.
My soul is consumed with longing
for your laws at all times.
You rebuke the arrogant, who are accursed,
those who stray from your commands.
Remove from me their scorn and contempt,
for I keep your statutes.
Though rulers sit together and slander me,
your servant will meditate on your decrees.
Your statutes are my delight;
they are my counselors.
Reflection & Questions
We’ve been looking this week in our Mixtapes readings at growing in our faith. We have seen that God’s word is central to growing. As we commit to reading, meditating on and living out God’s word, we will grow! As we read yesterday, ‘you become what you commit to.’
Today’s section of Psalm 119 shows the difficulties that will come if you want to follow God. The psalmist says he is “a stranger on the earth” and he faces the “scorn and contempt” of the world, and the authorities “slander me.” The follower of God won’t be looked kindly on by the world. The world will try to tear us down.
But this doesn’t put the psalmist off. In fact he prays for more delight from God’s word. He hungers for more of it. He cries out to God, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law… do not hide your commands from me.” Even if he is slandered, he declares “your servant will meditate on your decrees.” That is an amazing faith. That is a challenging faith. The truth is, we will face trials and persecution in this life. The question is, we will let that stop us digging into God’s word or will it drive us to hunger and thirst for more of it?
- What word or phrase sticks out to you today from this Psalm?
- As we finish a week of readings on God’s word, what is one step you need to take to make meditating on God’s word more of a part of your life?
