Mixtapes Reading | Week 3 | Day 3

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Pray that God would open your eyes to wonderful things from His word today.

Bible Reading: Psalm 29

Read these verses three times slowly.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf,
Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes
with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
the Lord is enthroned as King forever.
The Lord gives strength to his people;
the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Reflection & Questions

In our Mixtapes readings this week, we are looking at psalms that declare the greatness of God. This psalm focuses on the mightiness of the Lord, using many ways to describe the power of “the voice of the Lord.” It starts by calling on the “heavenly beings,” those rulers in the heavenly realms who might be tempted to think they are all that and a bag of chips. David calls on them to bow low before the actual Mighty One, Yahweh Himself, and sing His praises. For His voice is “powerful” and “majestic”. David draws on things that would have been regarded as mighty – the oceans, the Cedars of Lebanon, the Desert of Kadesh – and says they are nothing compared to the power of Yahweh. As we read this Psalm, we can’t help but think of when He calmed the storm with just His voice. This is our God!

Having described the incredible power of our Lord, David ends with the startingly fact that this Mighty One “gives strength to his people” and “blesses his people with peace.” That is the truth. If you’re walking through a storm, He will give you strength. And when the storm passes, He will give you peace.

      1. What words or phrases stick out to you from this psalm?
      2. If you are going through a storm, ask God for His strength today. If you are in a time of peace, thank Him for that.
