Bible Reading: John 2:6-12

Read these verses three times slowly.

Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

Reflection & Questions

This is an amazing miracle. Water to wine. The process of making wine, especially good wine, takes years. Jesus does it in an instant. Without any grapes. Simply water in jars turning into wine. And not any wine, the best wine. Of course, for the Creator of the universe, this is child’s play. This isn’t the greatest of Jesus’ miracle, but it is his first. Apparently, even as a child and young man, He did not use His powers. It is now that “he revealed his glory.” His disciples get a front row seat of this miracle and their response is to believe in Him. The master of the banquet’s words are worth taking to heart: “You have saved the best till now.” Typically a host would bring out the best wine first, until the guests are too tipsy to notice the cheap stuff. With Jesus involved, there doesn’t need to be any consideration of the cost. He makes the good out of nothing. He can serve it up anytime. In Jesus, there are always better things ahead. When we might fear He’s run out of patience and grace to rescue us, He just keeps showing up with even more grace. For those who will trust Him, we will see Him do greater and greater things… for all eternity.

      1. How has Jesus worked in your life in the past? Thank Him for those ways.
      2. Is there an area of your life you are not trusting Him for? How does this miracle of Jesus speak into that?
