Bible Reading: John 1:42-50
Read these verses three times slowly.
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.
“Come and see,” said Philip.
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”
Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.”
Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.”
Reflection & Questions
We read yesterday of John the Baptist’s testimony of Jesus. Today, we read of another’s, Nathanael. Nathanael was Philip’s one. When Philip came to believe in Jesus it was Philip that he couldn’t wait to tell. Nathanael was skeptical, but Philip was persistent: “Come and see,” said Philip.
It is a great picture of evangelism. Philip has discovered Jesus. So he leads Nathanael to hear from Jesus. It was then Nathanael’s encounter with Jesus that changed him. The skeptic became a believer. “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel,” Nathanael says.
Philip’s invitation to Nathanael, is John’s invitation to his readers, too. “Come and see.” It is like he is saying to us, “come and read” and discover the Son of God, the King of Israel. The invitation to our ones can be similar. We can invite them to investigate. To read the Bible. To come to church. To seek the truth. To those who seek, Jesus promises, “Seek and you will find.”
- What do you learn from Philip’s invitation to Nathanael?
- Who is your one? How can you invite them to investigate Jesus?
