Bible Reading: John 3:31-36
Read these verses three times slowly.
The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever has accepted it has certified that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
Reflection & Questions
Yesterday, we read John the Baptist’s famous line: “ He must become greater; I must become less.” Today’s verses explain more of why our attitude to Jesus must be this way. John gives us at least seven reasons in these verses. Firstly, Jesus comes from heaven. He has come from a higher place, and so He must be given greater authority in our lives than anyone coming from earth. Secondly, he has seen the higher place and talked with the Father. No one else has had such a privileged position. Thirdly, he has been sent by God. Jesus’ mission is rubber-stamped by the Father Himself. Fourthly, Jesus “speaks the words of God.” So a rejection of His word is a rejection of the Father’s word. Fifthly, “the Father loves the Son.” The Father has deep affection for Jesus and so should we. Sixth, the Father “has placed everything in [Jesus’] hands. In other words, there is no one higher than Jesus and to not make Him the greatest thing in our life defies logic. Seventh, and finally, those that believe in Jesus have eternal life and those that do not, will perish.
- As you read these verses about the supremacy of Jesus, what sticks out to you?
- How do these verses encourage us about how much we can trust Jesus? Where do you need to remember that “everything is in his hands” today?
