John Reading Plan | Week 6, Day 3

Prayer

Pause for a moment of quiet and stillness. To center yourself fully, take a deep breath in and exhale slowly. Repeat this process three times. Ask God to open your eyes to the amazing truths in His word today.

Bible Reading: John 6:30-40

Read these verses three times slowly.

So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Reflection & Questions

Jesus is continuing to speak with the crowd that he fed at the beginning of this chapter. And now we are starting to see the deep spiritual application of why Jesus fed them bread. The crowd can’t help but compare what Jesus did to what Moses did in the desert, when manna, a bread-like food, came down from heaven each day to feed them. It literally was raining food. And the crowds are right to compare, but Jesus wants them to take this much further. The bread the Father is now sending isn’t bread for their stomachs – it is bread for their souls.

Jesus tells them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty… everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

This is an incredible claim. Jesus is claiming that with Him is the secret to satisfaction and eternal life. Even more than that, this is the first of six “I am” statements Jesus makes in John’s gospel. “I am” is God’s name, which He revealed to Moses in Exodus 3, and now amazingly Jesus is taking this name upon Himself. No wonder, C.S. Lewis said Jesus cannot simply be a good teacher. He is either a liar, a lunatic or He is Lord.

The question for us in this passage is where we are looking for satisfaction. In Jesus we will find bread for our souls. Are we returning to Him again and again or have we moved on looking somewhere else for satisfaction? It is only in Him that we will find truly satisfying food for our souls.

      1. Where might people look for satisfactions for their souls?
      2. Are you finding satisfaction for your soul in Jesus? Why or why not?
