Bible Reading: John 15:26-27
Read these verses three times slowly.
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
Reflection & Questions
We are continuing to dwell on Jesus’ words to His disciples on the night before He is crucified. He is preparing His disciples for when He will no longer be with them. In yesterday’s verses He told them that they are not to be surprised if the world hates them, because the world also hates Him.
To be hated is to be unsettled and to feel threatened. To be hated is to have your attitudes and actions questioned. To be hated is personal and can shake our very core. Jesus knows this intimately and He knows our vulnerability. This is why He sends us the Holy Spirit. It is no accident that here in the context of talking about being hated, that Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Advocate.” What is an advocate? Someone who publicly supports a cause or person. A champion. A backer. A protector. Jesus wants us to know that while we might be hated, we have Someone in our corner, and He is no less than God Himself. And the Holy Spirit will be the chief witness that what we stand for in Jesus is the truth, for He is the Spirit of Truth.
Yes, we “must testify” about Jesus. Yes, we are to be a witness. And yes, that will lead to us being hated by some. But never will we stand alone. Never are we without a protector or a champion. The Advocate is always with us.
- What words or phrases from these verses encourage you today? Why?
- Do you believe the Spirit is your advocate? Why or why not? Talk to God about this and ask for Him to reveal to you more about the Holy Spirit.
