John Reading Plan | Week 11, Day 1
Prayer
As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.
Bible Reading: John 16:1-6
Read these verses three times slowly.
“All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.
Reflection & Questions
We are digging into John 16 this week, and it is still the night before Jesus is crucified. He is preparing His disciples for what is coming. He loves them and wants to make sure they are aware. In fact, in these verses today, he tells them why he has told them all these things.
He says, “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away.” What is to come will be immensely hard for the disciples. They will be rejected and even killed. Jesus knows that it will threaten their very commitment to him. But Jesus is telling them so that they “will remember that I warned you about them.”
This isn’t just for the disciples. Jesus has told us many things about this world. That we would face hardship and trouble. That we would walk through the valley of the shadow of death. We should not be surprised at the trials we face. But we thank God that he warned us, and we stand firm in the midst of them, not allowing them to trouble our hearts.
- What word or phrase in these verses sticks out to you? Why?
- Do trials surprise you? How does the fact that Jesus warned us that we would face trials change the way you respond to them?
