John Reading Plan | Week 12, Day 1

Prayer

As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.

Bible Reading: John 17:1-5

Read these verses three times slowly.

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

Reflection & Questions

We have reached the last moments before Jesus is arrested and led to His death and what is Jesus doing? He’s praying. There’s perhaps nothing that will truly show the heart of someone more than the content of their prayers and in this chapter we get to see what’s in Jesus’ heart. As we will see over the next few days, He is praying for His disciples and He’s praying for us. Amazing.

But as He begins to pray, He looks to His Father, and prays for glory. He knows that suffering is coming, but after that glory. The glory of being the resurrected King who makes a way for the world to be reconciled with God. As He prays of Himself, “For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.” This is His goal, His aim, His joy. As it says in Hebrews 12:2, “For the joy set before him he endured the cross.”

Jesus’ sight is set on eternal life. He is obsessed with us receiving eternal life. It’s much more than a “ticket to heaven.” He prays, “This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” Eternal life is to know God. To be in a relationship with Him. Jesus loves His Father. They have eternal joy in each other and He is willing to go through death so that we might experience the joy of that relationship for ourselves.

      1. What word or phrase in these verses sticks out to you in Jesus’ prayer? Why?
      2. Have you thought of eternal life being a relationship? How does that add to what eternal life means to you?
