John Reading Plan | Week 12, Day 5

Prayer

As you draw near to spend time with Jesus, quiet your mind and body until you feel completely present. Express your gratitude to Jesus for coming to save you!

Bible Reading: John 17:24-26

Read these verses three times slowly.

“Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

“Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

Reflection & Questions

We finish our week of readings with the end of Jesus’ prayer. As He is facing betrayal and the cross, Jesus looks to the future with joy and longing: “I want those you have given me to be with me where I am.” What an utterly amazing prayer. Jesus wants us to be with Him. He wants to bring us into the safety and security of heaven. In this moment of great trial, He can almost taste the future and speak of it in the present tense. He is ready to gather us to be with Him. He longs for us to be all together.

But there’s more. He also prays that we would “see [His] glory.” If we didn’t know better, this sounds like an arrogant prayer. How could someone pray, “I want them to see my glory”?! However, this isn’t arrogant, because seeing Jesus’ glory is the most wonderful thing in the universe, and it was what our hearts were made for. It is the treasure we are looking for and nothing else will satisfy the depths of our being. In seeing His glory, everything changes. It will be tasting His goodness and love in unfiltered technicolor and nothing will ever be the same. The hole in our heart will be filled with light and joy. Jesus can’t wait to make us whole. One day we will be with Him. And we will behold His glory. And our hearts will be made whole. Come, Lord Jesus!
