Prayer
Give your soul a moment of silence to align with your body. Express gratitude to God for the opportunity to be with Him and invite Him to meet you at this time.
Bible Reading: John 10:7-10
Read these verses three times slowly.
Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Reflection & Questions
Jesus continues today with his analogy about us being sheep, but today He widens it and calls Himself “the gate for the sheep.” Why the gate? Because He is the only way to enter salvation. He is not A gate for the sheep, but THE gate: “whoever enters through me will be saved.” The invitation is wide (“whoever”), but the way is narrow (“through me”).
The picture of salvation in these verses is a place of safety and security. The sheep “come in and go out and find pasture.” It is “life …to the full.” Anyone else who promises pasture for the sheep are simply “thieves and robbers” who come to “steal and kill and destroy.” The sheep who’ve entered through THE gate though have rest and peace.
The disciple who is connected to Jesus is one who experiences the full life, the life of rest and peace. This does not mean the circumstances of his life are easy. But there’s a sweet and close relationship with Jesus, knowing that He is watching over him. The disciple loves Jesus’ voice. Loves spending time with Him. There is no one and nothing that can take that central place in the disciple’s heart. Jesus is life and life to the full. Nothing else compares.
- What word or phrase sticks out to you from these verses? Why?
- Have you allowed other voices to take a central place in your heart? Do you love to be with Jesus? Talk to Him honestly about that.
