Mixtapes Reading | Week 1 | Day 4

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Ask God to give you His wisdom today.

Bible Reading: Psalm 119:9-16

Read these verses three times slowly.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Praise be to you, Lord;
teach me your decrees.
With my lips I recount
all the laws that come from your mouth.
I rejoice in following your statutes
as one rejoices in great riches.
I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
I delight in your decrees;
I will not neglect your word.

Reflection & Questions

It’s been said that you become what you commit to. If you commit to watching every baseball game on TV you will become an expert on the game of baseball. If you commit to spending time gardening you will become an expert gardener. In fact, it’s estimated that it takes about 10,000 hours of time spent doing something to become an expert at it.

The psalmist in our verses today is all about becoming an expert in God’s word. He is spending time seeking God “with all his heart” and he “delights in [God’s] decrees.” He makes a firm commitment to God, “I will not neglect your word.”

There is a specific way that the psalmist is taking in God’s word in these verses. He says, “I have hidden your word in my heart” and “With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.” What is he doing? He is memorizing scripture. Committing scripture to memory is a fantastic way to grow in the knowledge and understanding of God. There is something about saying it over and over again in the process of memorizing it, that your eyes are opened more to what it means. You also find that the Holy Spirit brings verses you’ve committed to memory back to your mind at pertinent times for yourself or for others.

The psalmist has laid down the challenge. Will we neglect God’s word or will we commit to becoming an expert in it? Reading it and even memorizing parts of it?

      1. If you haven’t tried memorizing scripture before, why not commit Psalm 119:10 to memory this week: “I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.”
      2. Would you say you are becoming an expert in God’s word? Why or why not? What is your next step?
