Prayer

Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Thank God for time to spend with Him and ask Him to meet with you.

Bible Reading: Psalm 23

Read these verses three times slowly.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Reflection & Questions

Perhaps one of the most famous psalms and pieces of scripture in the entire Bible, Psalm 23 has been a source of comfort and encouragement to believers for millennia. It is no wonder as the psalm contains some powerful imagery of a close relationship with the Lord and His tender care for His people. The Lord is presented as a very active, ever-present help. There are green pastures, refreshment, right paths, absence of fear, comfort, a feast, an anointing, goodness and love for the sheep of the Lord. It ends with, “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” The word dwell is powerful here as it implies there is no out-staying the Host’s welcome and there is no impulse to rush off.

But even with all that, this psalm has no ‘rose colored’ view of life. It plumbs the depths of walking “through the darkest valley” and the imminent attack of evil and enemies. The confidence of the writer comes from his trust in his Shepherd, the Lord Himself. Whatever trials he might face, the Lord will be with Him. The Lord knows what he needs.

      1. What word or phrase in this psalm sticks out to you today? Why?
      2. Look again at the actions that the Lord takes in this psalm? Talk to God about which of those you need today.
