Bible Reading: Psalm 8
Read these verses three times slowly.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Reflection & Questions
The indescribable greatness of God. That is our topic this week as we journey through a mixtape of Psalms. The amazing thing, as Psalm 8 so profoundly says, is that not only is He the Lord, is also “our Lord.” He makes Himself known and accessible. And that really is the theme of this psalm – the unfathomable reality that the Almighty, who, with the work of His fingers, placed the moon and the stars, wants to relate with us. “What is mankind that you are mindful of them?” the psalmist asks. He is so powerful and perfect, why would He want to know us who are so weak and flawed? Yet He does.
In response to His glory and His accessibility, the psalmist rightly praises the Lord. “How majestic is your name in all the earth.” There is nothing that compares, nothing that gets even close to the resplendent, glorious, and magnificent God we call Yahweh. We are created to praise. Everyday, everywhere you will see people praising people, sports teams, car makers and more. But “our Lord” is the One who is truly due our praise! And, when we praise Him, it “silence[s] the foe and the avenger,” for they cannot argue with the glory and worthiness of our Lord Almighty.
But the Lord not only wants to relate with us. As the psalmist says, He takes it much further and wants us to rule together with Him. He empowers us. The psalm says, “you made them rulers over the worlds of your hands.” God is the supreme delegator and empowerer. He trusts and believes in us. He finds pleasure in seeing His creation joining Him in ruling well. He truly is worthy of all our praise.
- What words or phrases stick out to you from this psalm?
- God has given us different abilities when it comes to ruling together with Him. What has He made you to do? Praise Him for that today.
