Mixtapes Reading | Week 3 | Day 2

Prayer

Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Thank God for time to spend with Him and ask Him to meet with you.

Bible Reading: Psalm 2

Read these verses three times slowly.

Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
“Let us break their chains
and throw off their shackles.”

The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.
He rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,
“I have installed my king
on Zion, my holy mountain.”

I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
Ask me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
You will break them with a rod of iron;
you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
Kiss his son, or he will be angry
and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Reflection & Questions

Psalm 2 is known as a Messianic psalm because it speaks of and prophecies about the Messiah to come (who we know to be the Lord Jesus). About ten percent of the psalms are Messianic (Psalms 2, 8, 16, 22, 23, 24, 40, 41, 45, 68, 69, 72, 89, 102, 110, and 118).

It is not hard to spot the way that Psalm 2 points to Jesus, however it starts with the focus on the nations of the world. The psalmist asks “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain?… Against the Lord and his anointed one…” The answer lies in their view of God’s Kingship. They see His rule as “chains” and they want to throw off the “shackles.” This is so much the truth. People see God’s ways as a straightjacket preventing them from doing what they want. Unfortunately, they don’t have the wisdom to see that, like a fish is designed for water, we are designed to have God at the center of our lives and to follow His waves. We thrive when we submit to God. As the last line of the psalm says, “W “Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” But when we stray from that we dry up and die, like a fish out of water.

The plotting of the kings and the peoples doesn’t threaten God. He laughs it off. The rebellion of the people will be fruitless. The Lord will not be mocked. He tells His Messiah, “You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.” Psalm 1 was an invitation to draw near to God and be blessed. Psalm 2 is a warning for those who will reject God or fight against Him. It will be a fruitless and dangerous path. Far better to “kiss the son” and “take refuge in him.”

      1. What words or phrases stick out to you from this psalm?
      2. Are there any areas of your life where you are not submitting to God? Talk to Him about that today.
