Christmas Reading Plan | Week 1 Day 1

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Ask Him to teach you more about Himself today.

Bible Reading: Luke 1:1-4

Read these verses three times slowly.

Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

Reflection & Questions

The next few weeks in the lead up to Christmas our daily readings are going to focus on the first two chapters of Luke as we remember what the season is all about. Luke’s gospel gives a detailed account of the happenings around Jesus’ birth and his opening explains why he says he “carefully investigated everything from the beginning.” As he writes his letter to Theophilus, he wants to “write an orderly account.” And this account is based on eyewitnesses. The people Luke names were still alive when he wrote his letter and his readers would have been able to go talk to them. Why is Luke doing this? “So that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” Luke wants his readers to be confident in the truth. Jesus is the Messiah, the King of Kings, who came to earth as a baby, grew to be a man, who gave his life on the cross that those who believe in Him may have eternal life. Luke is certain of the truth, his investigations have revealed it again and again. He is now wanting everyone to know it.

      1. Do you “know the certainty of the things you have been taught”?
      2. During this Christmas season, how will you dwell on the reason for the season, Jesus Christ? ?
