Christmas Reading Plan | Week 1 Day 5

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you!

Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-33

Read these verses three times slowly.

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Reflection & Questions

Gabriel has been busy in Luke chapter 1. The last couple of days we have read of his visit to Zechariah, today he is visiting Mary. He has a similar message – a child to be born. Incredibly, this plan that God is launching begins with two impossible births. One to a couple too old to have children. One to a virgin. And both have very specific destinies. John the Baptist would come in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way for the Lord. Mary’s child, Jesus, will come to reign. He will be called “the Son of the Most High” and “his kingdom will never end.” Mary will carry and give birth to the King of Kings. The child that she will raise is God Himself. It cannot be overstated the immensity of the calling that Mary has received in this message. It also cannot be overstated the immensity of what God is doing. He is sending His Son as a baby. He is empowering a young woman to raise the King of Kings. There is wonder and awe in every direction as we reflect on the Christmas story.

      1. Take a moment to consider the wonder of the Christmas story.
      2. Do you picture Jesus as a King like Gabriel describes? What difference does that make in your trust of Him?
