Prayer
Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Thank God for time to spend with Him and ask Him to meet with you.
Bible Reading: Luke 2:8-14
Read these verses three times slowly.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
Reflection & Questions
As we might expect, God was very excited to announce the birth of His Son. What would have been a big surprise to anyone living in those days, would be that God chose shepherds to hear about it first. Shepherds were considered low-class and likely thieves. They weren’t reputable people. They certainly weren’t the ones you’d announce the birth of a King to. But this was a different kind of King and the shepherds were exactly the kind of people who would be overjoyed by His birth. For this child was the “Savior…The Messiah, the Lord.” He hadn’t come for the ones who thought they had it all together. He hadn’t come for the puffed up. He had come for the humble, the sinners, the sick-in-soul. He would save them and would “cause great joy for all the people.” And it was these shepherds who got to hear it first. Sure, God had been saying Messiah was coming for centuries, but it was these shepherds who got to hear “Today..a Savior has been born to you.” He has come!
- PIcture yourselves as the shepherds in this story and read the verses again. Imagine what you would be feeling and thinking as these verses play out.
- What is God teaching you through these verses today?
