Christmas Reading Plan | Week 4 Day 3

Prayer

Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Pray that God would open your eyes to wonderful things from His word today.

Bible Reading: Luke 2:39-40

Read these verses three times slowly.

When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.

Reflection & Questions

There are so many questions that these couple of verses raise. What was Jesus like as a toddler and preteen? How did he respond when he grazed his knee? What were his chores? How often did he get sick (or did he get sick)? Was he extroverted or introverted? Did he do miracles? What was his relationship like with his younger siblings? We could go on. There is much we’re not told because that isn’t the reason Luke is writing.

What we do learn is that he “grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.” The Lord of all creation grew. He experienced every step of the process from birth to adulthood. It is an amazing statement. It would be like us being born as an ant and growing and learning what it was to be an ant; but even that is not truly close to what Jesus did and what He experienced. This is the humility of our King. Becoming one of His creations in order to save us from our sins. This humility teaches us to embrace humility ourselves. If He did that, what can we not be willing to do? Nothing! He has removed every excuse and in joy invites us to embrace the same humility.

      1. Spend a moment thinking of other questions you have about Jesus’ childhood. Imagine all the scenarios He might have encountered and the humility He showed in coming to experience them.
      2. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to where you could be more humble and a servant of those around you.

Prayer
