EXIT US READING DAY 26
BIBLE READING PLAN
WEEK 6 – EXITING OUR IDOLS
DAY 1
This week in our readings, we’re looking at the theme of Exiting our Idols from Exodus 7-11. Today we review yesterday’s sermon.
Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Reflection: We must exit our idols, for “the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14). Like a spouse who will not tolerate anyone taking their rightful place as husband or wife, God is rightfully jealous to be #1 in our hearts.- Are there idols that you need to exit out of your life?
- Talk to God about that.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river. Confront him on the bank of the Nile, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened. 17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood. 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink; the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’” 19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.” 20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt. 22 But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water, because they could not drink the water of the river.
Reading 2: Exodus 34:14Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Reflection: Through the plagues that we heard about yesterday, God showed that there is no being who compares with Him. The Egyptians and Israelites alike were challenged to rid their lives of idols and worship the true and living God. We, too, must exit our idols, for “the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14). Like a spouse who will not tolerate anyone taking their rightful place as husband or wife, God is rightfully jealous to be #1 in our hearts. This “jealousy” isn’t a controlling or self-seeking obsession, but a loving and joyful desire for us, knowing that a relationship with Him is by far the best thing this world has to offer.- What struck you from the sermon yesterday?

Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
Reflection: Have you ever been jealous of someone? Maybe they got some new shoes you had your eye on. Or maybe they are so good at sports, and you’re jealous of their skills. So what does it mean to be jealous? It means to want something that someone else has, right? In our Bible reading today, it tells us that God is jealous. But how could God be jealous? I mean, He’s God, He has everything, doesn’t He? And even if there was something that He didn’t have, couldn’t He just snap His God fingers and get it? Well truthfully, God isn’t jealous of anything that anyone has. He gets jealous if we, His creation and His children, are loving things more than we love Him. Because God doesn’t force us to love Him, He gives us the choice to either love Him or not. And when we chose to love other things more than we love God, He gets jealous! That’s why the Bible says to not worship any other gods, or really, any other things at all! God loves you more than you can ever even imagine, and He wants you to chose to love Him as well.- Is there anything that you love more than God? Is there anything that you prioritize more than God? What is it?
- What is one way you can focus more on God today than anything else?
