John Reading Plan | Week 10, Day 2
Prayer
Give your soul a moment of silence to align with your body. Express gratitude to God for the opportunity to be with Him and invite Him to meet you at this time.
Bible Reading: John 15:5-8
Read these verses three times slowly.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
Reflection & Questions
Yesterday, we saw how Jesus calls us to remain in Him. And that means there is a determined and dedicated decision to make Jesus number 1. To pursue Him and His ways. To settle for nothing less than Him.
Out of that pursuit, will come much fruit. Paul describes this fruit in Galatians 5 as the fruit of the Spirit (Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self Control). Fruit is also used to describe reproduction – that our lives will cause others around us to pursue Jesus.
This fruit is a sign of our remaining in Jesus, but it is not the remaining. The good works that we do are not to be confused with remaining in Him. For if the works become our remaining, we will quickly find that we are no longer with him. And before we know it, the fruit will dry up. As it has been said, be careful that you do not let doing the work of God destroy the work of God in you.
Bearing fruit is a noble goal. But the path to fruitfulness is not trying to manufacture fruit. It is in connection to the vine. It is in the remaining in Jesus.
- What word or phrase sticks out to you from these verses? Why?
- Have you ever found yourself doing good works without being connected to Jesus? What did you learn?
