Bible Reading: John 10:34-42

Read these verses three times slowly.

Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are “gods”’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside— what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp.

Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true.” And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Reflection & Questions

Yesterday, we left with the Jewish opponents lifting stones to put Jesus to death because of his claim to be God.

In the face of this Jesus did not panic, but as a great Rabbi appealed to their reason and the law. He quotes Psalm 82, where the judges were called “gods” because in their office they determined the fate of other men. “Jesus is saying that if human judges can in some sense be called gods, this designation is even more appropriate for the one who truly is the Son of God” (ESV Study Bible). As He says, “the Father is in me and I in the Father.” Jesus has been very clear about who He is and they won’t accept it.

So Jesus invites them to believe based on the works He has done, but the Jewish opponents would not believe. They were so blinded in their religious pride, that they couldn’t receive the Son of God standing before them. “They tried to seize him,” but Jesus “escaped their grasp” and left Jerusalem. The city of the Temple, the center of Israel, which anyone would think would be the first to receive Him, had rejected Him. But across the Jordan, “many believed in Jesus.” How often the people we think should receive Jesus, don’t, and the ones who seem so far from God, receive Him with open arms. This is because a relationship with Jesus is not based on our religiosity, our works, or our knowledge, but on our humility to bow the knee to Him and our willingness to listen to His voice.

      1. What words or phrases from these verses encourage you today? Why?
      2. Are there people around you who you think would never receive Jesus? Why?
