John Reading Plan | Week 15, Day 4
Prayer
Pause for a moment of quiet and calm. To be fully present in both body and mind, inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Repeat this three times. Ask God to grant you His wisdom today.
Bible Reading: John 12:27-36
Read these verses three times slowly.
“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”
Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.
Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.
The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?”
Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.
Reflection & Questions
We’re continuing to read John’s account of Holy Week, as Jesus is in Jerusalem with the flocks of crowds celebrating Passover. But as He teaches the crowds, what is on His mind is HIs death.
He says, “Now my soul is troubled.” He knows what He is facing and His humanity is stressed. We mustn’t forget that Jesus was fully man, and what comfort it is to us to know that like us, He was troubled in trial. But did He call out to be rescued from this? “No,” He says, “it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” He faced his trouble and walked through it, knowing the Father was with Him.
If your soul is troubled today, look to the Savior who knows exactly what a troubled soul feels like. He has been there. As the writer of Hebrews wrote, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
- What word or phrase from these verses sticks out to you today? Why?
- Are you in a “time of need”? If so, take the words of Hebrews and approach God’s throne of grace with confidence right now and talk with Him.
