John Reading Plan | Week 17, Day 1

Prayer

Bible Reading: John 21:1-3

Read these verses three times slowly.

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Reflection & Questions

This week we are reading the last chapter of John, and it begins with this fascinating story of seven of the disciples out fishing. They all went out to fish one night, and they caught nothing. These are experienced fishermen, but experience didn’t matter that night. What is striking in this scene is that after spending three years with Jesus, seeing all that he has done, they are back in a boat fishing. Going back to old ways. There are some who think Peter did something wrong by doing this. Others who think it was just natural. One commentator believes that since Jesus’ crucifixion their financial provision could have dried up and they would have needed to do something to provide for themselves. What is clear, however, is that there are really not certain what to do. They have seen Jesus risen from the dead, but Jesus hasn’t given them the next step. This lack of certainty is a huge contrast with how they are after Pentecost, and receiving the instructions of Jesus to go preach to the nations.
