Prayer

As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.

Bible Reading: John 14:1-4

Read these verses three times slowly.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Reflection & Questions

As we begin a new chapter on John, the scene is still the night before Jesus is crucified. In fact, the next several chapters are his teachings on that night. And there’s plenty in what Jesus says is going to happen that could trouble their hearts. Truth is, it’s similar for us. There is a lot that could trouble our hearts, if we let it. In this chapter, however, Jesus gives solid ground upon which to plant our hearts when things around us are crumbling.

Where are we to anchor our hearts? Jesus’ first answer is God Himself. “You believe in God, believe also in me.” We don’t ground ourselves in circumstances. We don’t ground ourselves in things going the way we planned. We ground ourselves in a Person who is love and power personified. We ground ourselves in Someone who always has been and always will be. We anchor our hearts to our to Him. Then Jesus says we are not at the destination. The reality is, this life is the worst it gets. Yes, it can get bad, but we have a future in the Father’s House. Most importantly, Jesus will make sure we get there: “I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

There is plenty of trouble to trouble our hearts. But Jesus says, “don’t let your hearts be troubled.” Keep your head. God is on the throne!

      1. What word or phrase in these verses sticks out to you? Why?
      2. Are you letting your heart be troubled? If so, how can you anchor your heart more in Jesus?
