John Reading Plan | Week 9, Day 5

Prayer

As you draw near to spend time with Jesus, quiet your mind and body until you feel completely present. Express your gratitude to Jesus for coming to save you!

Bible Reading: John 14:25-31

Read these verses three times slowly.

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

“You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

Reflection & Questions

A good parent prepares their children as much as they can for what is coming. A good leader communicates the plan. In John 14, Jesus has been laying out what’s going to happen so that the disciples can be prepared and instead of being shaken in their faith, what comes actually builds it. He says, “I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.” But He doesn’t want them to worry if they have problems remembering, for the Holy Spirit will come to teach and remind them. It is thanks to the Spirit’s work that we have the Scriptures to read.

But, the Spirit isn’t just a teacher and reminder to the apostles, He is the same for us today. It is amazing how at just the right time, the Spirit reminds us of scripture or teaching that we need. He is our Guide and Helper. We need to learn to walk with Him and listen to His voice. His voice echoes Jesus’ words that He began John 14 and now repeats towards the end of this chapter: “Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” As we confidently recognize the Spirit’s work in our life, we can find our anchor, not in our circumstances or our actions, but in our unbreakable relationship with God.

      1. What words or phrases from these verses encourage you today? Why?
      2. Where are you seeking to calm your fear or trouble? Is it in Jesus or something else?
