Bible Reading (read these verses three times slowly)
Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”
With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Reflection & Questions
Today’s parable is a prophecy that has been fulfilled in an amazing way. When Jesus died on the cross, there were few who were following Him (and they were scared to death). You might say the Kingdom was like a mustard seed at this point. But after He rose again, those few became bold witnesses who, filled with the Holy Spirit, spread the message of the gospel, to where today billions of people claim the name of Jesus. Amazing!
The principle of God using the small things making a big impact is built into the Kingdom of God. If you feel small, you’re exactly the kind of person God can use!
- Have you counted yourself out of being used by God because you feel small and insignificant?
Pray
Thank God for sending Jesus and spreading the gospel across the world. Ask God where He wants to use you today and listen for His voice.
Worship Song
Because the message of Jesus spread across the world, you heard it. You might thank God for that today using this song:

Reflection and Questions
Today’s parable is a prophecy that has been fulfilled in an amazing way. A prophecy is when God tells someone a promise that is going to happen one day. And every time that God tells a prophecy to someone, it comes true! When Jesus died on the cross, there were few who were following Him, like His disciples and other followers who believed what He was saying. You might say the Kingdom was like a mustard seed at this point, which is SUPER tiny! It’s close to the size of a strawberry seed – TINY! But after Jesus came back to life and rose from the dead, those few who followed Jesus became confident followers who spread the message of the Jesus so much, that now there are billions of people who follow Jesus! Amazing!
God uses even tiny things to make HUGE changes to the world! What changes can you make?
- Have you ever felt like you’re too small to make changes in the world?
- What is one way that you can make a BIG change today in someone’s life?
Prayer
Thank God for sending Jesus to the world. Ask God where He wants to use you today to make a difference.
