Mark Reading Plan – W5D2
Week 5 | Day 2 | Mark 5:14-20
Pray
Thank God for something in your life and ask Him to speak to you through your reading and reflection today.
Bible Reading (read these verses three times slowly)
Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and told about the pigs as well. Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Reflection & Questions
It’s fascinating the reactions to Jesus in this story. The tormented man is now free and wants to be with Jesus! And the villagers are now afraid and want to kick Jesus out of town. Their reactions had all to do with what they valued. Jesus will always put people before things and faith over comfort.
Jesus did leave the region, but he didn’t allow the freed man to go with him. Jesus had a job for him to do: “Go home… and tell how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” It’s the same job Jesus has for all who love Him.
- Do you value people before things and faith over comfort? How do you know?
- What has Jesus done for you? Who could you tell today?
Pray
Pray for an opportunity to tell others what Jesus has done for you.
Worship Song
As you pray for an opportunity today, you could use this song to worship Jesus:

Reflection and Questions
Remember the story from yesterday? Isn’t it so interesting the reactions that we see towards Jesus after this story? The man from the story is now free and wants to be with Jesus! And the villagers are now afraid and want to kick Jesus out of town. But what do you think mattered more to Jesus, people liking Him, or healing people and doing the right thing? Of course healing and doing the right thing! Jesus will always put loving people before anything else.
Jesus did leave the town like the villagers asked, but he didn’t allow the freed man to go with him. Jesus had a job for him to do. He said to the man: “Go home… and tell how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.” It’s the same job Jesus has for everyone who loves Him. Which means that it’s the same job that He has for you and me!
- What has Jesus done for you? Who could you tell today?
Prayer
Pray for a chance to tell others what Jesus has done for you.

Devo
This story of the man who was possessed by demons: in a sense it’s tough to relate to. But then again, have you ever had something overwhelming and terrible happen in your life and God helped you walk through it and come out okay on the other side? That’s reason enough to be grateful, right? It’s fascinating the reactions to Jesus in this story. The tormented man is now free and wants to be with Jesus! And the villagers are now afraid and want to kick Jesus out of town. Their reactions had all to do with what they valued. Jesus will always put people before things and faith over comfort.
