Bible Reading: Psalm 1

Read these verses three times slowly.

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Reflection & Questions

This summer in our sermons and our reading plan we are digging into the Psalms with a series we’ve called “Mixtapes.” The title is apt as the Psalms are a mix tape of various spiritual songs too that give us guidance for daily life. This week we are going to look at five different Psalms that talk about growing in relationship with God. And today, we start at the very beginning, Psalm 1.

It is very strategic that the Psalms begin with this Psalm. It is all about the blessed person or the one who experiences the good life. What do we notice about this person? Instead of following the ways of the world, they meditate day and night on the word of God. They make God’s word their guide. It is their delight. Because of this they become like a “tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither…” In other words the word of God is a source of nourishment and strength for ever-green spirituality.

This is why the Psalms begin here. It is the one who made the mix tape saying meditate on these songs, think about them, and work them out into your life. They will lead you to the good life.

      1. What word or phrase sticks out to you today from this Psalm?
      2. How has God’s word made a difference in your life? How would you like to grow in your faith this summer?
