Mixtapes Reading | Week 1 | Day 3
Prayer
Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Pray that God would open your eyes to wonderful things from His word today.
Bible Reading: Psalm 119:1-8
Read these verses three times slowly.
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the Lord.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart—
they do no wrong
but follow his ways.
You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.
Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!
Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.
I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.
I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me.
Reflection & Questions
In the next three Mixtapes readings we are going to look at three sections of the longest chapter in the Bible, Psalm 119. This psalm is made up of 22 sections, and it is all about following God’s word.
Like Psalm 1, the psalm starts by talking about the blessed person, the person who experiences the good life. What does this person do? Their “ways are blameless” and they “walk according to the law of the Lord.” In Psalm 1 we learned that the blessed person delight in God’s word, and in Psalm 119 we learn that the blessed person follows God’s word. If you want the good life, you’ve now got the recipe!
This psalmist has a realism that makes him very relatable. He sees the blessed person “whose ways are blameless,” and he wishes he could do the same. He cries out, “Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees!” He knows that he falls short. But that doesn’t stop him wanting to grow and wanting to learn. He tells God that he will “learn you righteous laws” and that he will “praise [Him] with an upright heart.” This psalmist doesn’t let his failures keep him down. He’s right back up, praising God and asking for His help. He is committed to following God more closely. “I will obey your decrees,” he declares and asks for God’s mercy, “do not utterly forsake me.”
The psalmist reveals the tension of growing with God. We know that the best thing for us is to walk in God’s ways, but we find it so hard to stay on the straight and narrow. In spite of that, let’s learn from his commitment and determination to follow God and do the same!
- What word or phrase sticks out to you today from this Psalm?
- Are you continuing to grow in your walk with God or have you stalled? What is your next step? Talk to God about that.
