Mixtapes Reading | Week 2 | Day 4
Prayer
Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Ask God to give you His wisdom today.
Bible Reading: Psalm 27:1-5
Read these verses three times slowly.
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked advance against me
to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.
One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.
Reflection & Questions
Life is a white knuckle ride. There’s times when it feels like you are holding on to the metaphorical safety bar, hoping you don’t fall out. Whether it be our finances, relationships or health diagnosis, or something else, there are plenty of opportunities to freak out. Following God doesn’t take these moments away.
However, for the believer the perspective of these white knuckle moments is far different. As David writes in this psalm, the privilege of a relationship with the Lord, is that you now have a “light” to show the way in the dark times, you have a savior when you are drowning, and you have a “stronghold” to run into when you’re under attack. Armed with this perspective, David can say “though an army besiege me…though war breaks out against me, even then I will be confident.” That is amazing.
Did he always see it that way? No. From reading the psalms, we know he had weak days and doubting days. Days when he couldn’t lift his eyes away from the mountain that looked bigger and scarier than ever before. But the truth is, that everyday, whether in his strong or weak days, God never changed. He was always, and is always the light, the savior and the stronghold of your life.
- What is a white knuckle experience you’ve had that God showed Himself faithful? Thank Him for that.
- Are you facing something scary right now? How does this psalm help you?
