Mixtapes Reading | Week 5 | Day 2

Prayer

Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Thank God for time to spend with Him and ask Him to meet with you.

Bible Reading: Psalm 131:1-3

Read these verses three times slowly.

My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.

Reflection

By Pastor Jim Todd

Ascending toward Jerusalem there would be a heart check for every genuine pilgrim. Sometimes when I prepare to meet someone I conduct a breath check – time for a breath mint or stick of gum? Or I look in a mirror – do I look presentable? As you draw near to God your breath and appearance aren’t as important as your heart is. Pride and haughtiness (“arrogance” – a close cousin to pride) are like relational barbed wire to having a friendship with God. To be able to say the first half of Ps 131:1 means intentional preparation has been considered. The second half of the verse admits you fully claim being a simple person in the presence of an omniscient God. We truly comprehend the grandeur and depth of many things in life, and we cannot bluff answers to explain many things.

To have “stilled and quieted my soul” (v. 2) is an intentional disposition. Biathlon competitors in the winter olympics quickly reduce their breathing and motion to accurately pull a trigger on their rifle. Life is moving so fast all around us … and we must learn the art of “stilling and quieting our souls” before the Lord.

Ascending into God’s presence also must involve examining where our true hopes lie … and reminding the long haul is where eternity will take us.

Prayer

Talk to God in response to today’s reading. Ask the Lord for your heart to be genuine. your soul to be quieted, and your hope to be focused.
