Pray for ONE Reading Plan | Week 1 | Day 1

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Ask Him to teach you more about Himself today.

Bible Reading: Psalm 51:10-13

Read these verses three times slowly.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
so that sinners will turn back to you.

Reflection & Questions

As we begin our series “Pray for ONE,” a very good place to start is confession. Confession that we are broken and we don’t have it all together. Confession that we can’t reach any ONEs without Jesus.

In Psalm 51, David’s desire is to reach ONEs. He says he wants to “teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you.” However, there’s a big obstacle in the way. In this Psalm, David is praying for forgiveness after he commits murder and adultery. He is broken and desperate before God, knowing how far he has fallen short. He longs for God to “create in [him] a pure heart.” He wants to experience again the “joy of [God’s] salvation.”

As we journey in this series we will discover our ONEs and learn how to pray for them. But before we go any further, first let us confess our sins and our need for God. Let us get right with our Maker. Let us taste again of His amazing forgiveness and acceptance and (if necessary) rediscover the joy of His salvation!

      1. Are there actions or attitudes that you need to confess before God? What’s a next step you need to take to turn from those?
      2. Why do you think knowing the joy of God’s salvation is a key part of reaching our ONEs? Are you experiencing that joy? Why or why not?
