Pray for ONE Reading Plan | Week 2 | Day 2

Prayer

Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Ask God to open your eyes to wonderful things from His word.

Bible Reading: Matthew 6:9-14

Read these verses three times slowly.

“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

Reflection & Questions

This week in our readings we are looking at the Lord’s prayer line by line. Yesterday we saw that as we pray we are to pray to our powerful Father. Today we are looking at the two lines:

your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.

What is God’s kingdom? The simple answer is that God’s kingdom is where God is recognized and followed as King. It is a beautiful place of peace, security, and freedom, where God’s will is done. God’s kingdom is certainly heaven, but it can also be on earth! In our prayers, we’re to ask God for his reign to come here. For him to be recognized and followed as King.

You might look back on a time in your life when there was a president you highly respected, or a boss in your company who you trusted, or a parental figure in your family whose presence made everything feel good. You wish for that person and those times again. That feeling is a little taste of what we’re praying for in “your kingdom come.” We’re asking for God’s kingdom to come – his peace, security and freedom.

This is a prayer that can be prayed for each of our loved ones, for our friends, for our workplace, for our neighborhood, our city, country and world. “Your kingdom come!” We pray, “May ____ recognize you as King and follow you and your peace, security and freedom come into their life. (You fill in the blank).

      1. How does today’s lines of the Lord’s prayer encourage and challenge you in your prayers?
      2. Where do you want to see God’s kingdom to come? Pray for that today.
