Pray for ONE Reading Plan | Week 2 | Day 5
Prayer
As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you and he will never leave you nor forsake you.
Bible Reading: Matthew 6:9-14
Read these verses three times slowly.
“This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
Reflection & Questions
We’ve reached our last reading on the Lord’s prayer. This is an amazing prayer in many ways, no less in the way it brings seemingly opposing ideas together. It addresses a close Father and a powerful God. We’re to pray “His kingdom come” and “give us our daily bread” at the same time. And today we see how this prayer holds together that we have responsibility for our sin and yet there’s an acknowledgement that we are in a spiritual battle that can throw us off the narrow path. Yesterday we read of the acknowledgement of our sin. The prayer ends with these lines:
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
Life is full of tests. Some of these are trials that God sovereignly brings into our lives to grow our faith. These are circumstances and trials where we can be faithful or faithless. Obedient or disobedient. Hope-filled or hopeless. This prayer acknowledges that in the midst of those trials we are weak and we need God’s protection. We can easily fall into temptation. We can easily, like Adam and Eve, be ensnared by the evil one. This is a prayer that we would be like Jesus when he was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the evil one (Matt 4:1). He did not fall into temptation. He stood strong and was delivered. He withstood the test. We’re to pray for the same result. That God would hold us up that we would not yield to temptation, but would stand strong and pass the test!
- What is a circumstance or trial you are facing right now that is testing your faith, hope or obedience? Talk to God about it and ask for His protection and deliverance.
