Rest Reading Plan | Day 1
Prayer
As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Ask Him to teach you more about Himself today.
Bible Reading: Matthew 11:28-30
Read these verses three times slowly.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Reflection & Questions
This week we are reading verses around the theme of Rest. The truth is it isn’t just our bodies that need rest, but our souls as well. In our verses today, Jesus invites the “weary and burdened” to receive His rest.
Jesus looked upon the crowds he was teaching, and he saw people weighed down by the worries and concerns of this life. Stressed by lack of money to provide, the care of the young or the elderly, the rules of the religious, the oppression of an occupying Roman force, and more, the people were desperate for someone who would give them rest. Not just a physical rest, but someone who would lift their burdens and allow their souls to breathe. Jesus invited them to “learn from” Him. To learn not a way of heaviness, but a way of lightness. A way that no matter the circumstances, could be described as rest. He was not like the religious teachers; He was “gentle and humble in heart.” He loved the people and wanted to give them rest.
As we go into a potentially busy and burdensome holiday season, it is not a time for less rest with Jesus, but more. It is not a time to skip our time with Him, but to lean in more. Jesus is the One who is offering us rest for our souls. It is what we need. Will we receive it?
- What word or phrase in today’s verses sticks out to you?
- Jesus invites us into His rest. Are you accepting His invitation or resisting it? How do you need to apply HIs words this week?
