Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Ask Him to teach you more about Himself today.

Bible Reading: Acts 20:33-35

Read these verses three times slowly.

I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. You yourselves know that these hands of mine have supplied my own needs and the needs of my companions. In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’

Reflection & Questions

How would you define “the good life”? Perhaps it is a beach vacation, peaceful relationships or a big house? Who comes to mind when you think of someone who has “the good life”?

Our verses today are in the middle of a scene where Paul is saying heartfelt goodbyes to the leaders of the church of Ephesus. He is speaking about how much he loves the church and how he did everything he could to minister to them, including being generous amongst them. He didn’t burden them, but by his own work, provided for himself and others.

As he says goodbye, he tells them that this isn’t just a way of life for him, this is the way we are all to live. “We must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive,’” he told them. As we begin a week looking at Unstoppable Generosity, Jesus’ words are a very good place to start. He says “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” A good translation of blessed is “the good life.” The good life according to the maker of the universe is a life of generosity. He doesn’t mean that givers will be wealthier or healthier. But there will be a joy and a sense of “the good life” when we give, because that’s how our Designer designed us. The “good life” belongs to the generous.

      1. Do you believe “the good life” belongs to the generous? How do you know?
      2. How have you experienced joy when giving?
