Walk in the Light Reading Day 1

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Ask Him to teach you more about Himself today.

Bible Reading: Genesis 1:1-5; Revelation 21:22-22:5

Read these verses three times slowly.

Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Revelation 21:22-22:5
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

Reflection & Questions

This week we are pausing our David reading plan to follow the theme of our weekend sermon, which was to “Walk in the Light.”

Today’s verses are from the very beginning and ends of Scripture. And what do we find in both readings? Light. What did God create first? Light! And, “God saw that the light was good.” What do we find at the end of Scripture in the description of heaven and eternity? That instead of the sun bringing us light and warmth, it will be God Himself who will be our light. As it says, “God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp” and “There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.” In fact in 1 John 1:5 it says, “God is light.’ What does this mean? This means that in God you find freedom and joy. There is no fear; no lurking dangers in the shadows; no foreboding sensations. Everything is visible, true, authentic, and joyful. Darkness is despair. Light is hope and joy. And that is exactly what God is.

This is why we need to “walk in the light,” for that is where God is! If we are to dwell with Him forever, we have to come into the light and walk in the light. So it is no surprise then, that we find throughout Scripture, that the authors encourage us to be in the light. We will discover through our readings this week what that means and how we go about it. For today, we need to realize that God is light; He is full of purity, warmth, freedom and joy. And if we want to be with God, we need to come into the light.

      1. What are words and feelings that come to mind and you think about being… in darkness? …in light?
      2. As you think about God being light, what words come to mind to describe God? How does that help you understand God better?
