Walk in the Light Reading Day 2
Prayer
Allow some silence for your soul to catch up with your body. Thank God for time to spend with Him and ask Him to meet with you.
Bible Reading: 1 John 1:5-2:2
Read these verses three times slowly.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
Reflection & Questions
We are looking at the theme this week of “Walk in the Light.” This is John’s exhortation to his readers in these verses.
The problem with coming into the light, is that we might fear what gets exposed. In the corners and shadows of our hearts we have tucked away things that are painful and shameful. We fear what might be God’s response to those things.
In today’s verses, John is saying, we shouldn’t fear bringing it all into the light, we should actually fear hiding it. For those who bring everything into the light, what do they receive?
Firstly, Jesus “purifies us from all sin.” Instead of condemnation, for those who come into the light, we have an “advocate with the Father.” Jesus literally stands with us and pleads perfectly on our behalf. And his sacrifice atones us, wiping away all sin and shame.
Secondly, we “have fellowship with one another.” For those who walk in the light, have genuine, authentic relationships. We no longer carry a hidden burden that separates us from truly connecting with God and others. We can now be in the light, be in the freedom and joy of knowing we are truly accepted and redeemed and we can walk without shame.
But for those who do not bring all of themselves into the light, or “claim to be without sin” or “claim [they] have not sinned, they will not have fellowship with God or others, and they will remain in the darkness and lies.
We may fear the light, but the light is a place of freedom, forgiveness, healing and joy. What we really should fear is the darkness where there is hiding, shame and sin.
- What word or phrase from our verses today sticks out to you? Why?
- What do you need to bring into the light? Who is a trusted believer you could talk to about this?
