Walk in the Light Reading Day 5

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you!

Bible Reading: Romans 13:11-14

Read these verses three times slowly.

And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.

Reflection & Questions

Today we finish our readings on the theme of “Walk in the Light.” We have seen this week that from the beginning to the end of scripture, light is a key part of God’s design. That God Himself is light, and that means in Him are hope, truth and freedom. That we do not need to fear coming into the light because there is forgiveness and healing in the light. And that those who are in Christ are Children of Light and are to pay attention to their lives to stay in the light.

As we finish our readings, the Apostle Paul in Romans points his readers to the fact that we live in a dark world. He calls the days we are living in “night.” He says, “the day is almost here.” After a long night, the sunrise is a beautiful thing to behold. As darkness lifts, the warmth and the light of the sun brings everything to life. This is the picture that Paul is giving us as a promise of what is to come for those who believe. We are in the “night” right now. The sun will rise soon! Jesus is coming back. Hold on!

In order to stand strong in the night, Paul says “put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” That’s some kind of armor! The armor of light vanquishes the darkness simply with its presences and without lifting a sword. In contrast, the deeds of darkness will dim and even snuff out our light, leaving us exposed, cold and weak in the presence of this dark world. We must rid ourselves of those deeds. Paul says, rather “clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ.” What an amazing picture. Putting on Jesus Himself as our armor, to protect us from the darkness.

We have a choice of what we wear. The deeds of darkness or the armor of light. Deeds of destruction or the Lord Jesus Himself. What will you choose? What are you choosing?

      1. What are you wearing right now? Deeds of darkness or the armor of light? How do you know?
      2. What have you learned this week in our readings on “Walk in the light”? What do you need to do about it?
