Christmas Reading Plan | Week 4 Day 5

Prayer

As you come to spend time with Jesus, calm your mind and body until you feel fully present. Thank Jesus that he came to save you!

Bible Reading: Luke 2:48-52

Read these verses three times slowly.

When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Reflection & Questions

As we finish our Christmas reading plan today, we read of a (now) humorous exchange between Mary and Jesus. Every parent relates to this. But if there’s one thing that stands out in the Christmas story it is the humility of Jesus. He was willing to become a man – which is amazing, but even more so, He didn’t come as a grown man, but as a baby. He was willing to be laid in a manger, when He should have had a throne. He was willing to grow up and experience all that boys and girls experience through their years. And add one more to the list from today’s verses: he was willing to be obedient to Mary and Joseph. He was the Creator of all, the Lord of all. He could have spoken and a legion of angels would have answered. But that was not what was required to save us. He must live as a man and humble himself – including obeying his parents.

Mary “treasured all these things in her heart.” Whether it was the angel’s visit, the shepherds and wisemen, the losing Jesus at the temple or the obedience of the One who would be her Lord. These were things she marveled at. She worshiped from these memories. And for us the same thing is more than appropriate in our response. We’re to treasure, to marvel and to worship Jesus.
