Community Reading Plan | Day 3
Prayer
Take a moment to be silent and still. In order to be fully present in body and mind, take a deep breath in and let it out slowly. Do this three times. Pray that God would open your eyes to wonderful things from His word today.
Bible Reading: Acts 2:42-47
Read these verses three times slowly.
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Reflection & Questions
By Ken Mullette
I (Ken Mullette) have been part of numerous mission trips to Mexico over the years. During that time, many team members have had conversations with me about the unique experience of this trip. Often, the conversation revolves around the question of what is the “secret sauce” that makes the trip special. My answer always points to the formation of the church in Acts 2. The trip, like the early church, involves people coming together and dedicating themselves to service in the community, growing closer to God, while prioritzing the needs of the team.
Luke tells us three key beliefs that made the early church so attractive that people were dedicating their lives to Jesus daily. All the believers were committed to the mission and teachings of Jesus Christ (Acts 2:42). They put personal ambitions aside and chose oneness in mind and action (Acts 2:45-46). All this was not accomplished in isolation, but rather in a communal setting alongside fellow believers in Christ (Acts 2:44). It was this mindset that helped the early church to reach the community for Jesus.
Have you ever experienced a community like this before? Are you curious about what it is like to have all things “in common”? Then consider joining the Adult Mexico Team this fall. For over 30 years, Crossroads has partnered with Pastor Carlos Bravo and the people of Templo Sinai Church in the Mexican town of San Luis Rio Colorado as a perfect place for people to grow a love for missions. Dates for the next trip are November 7-11. For further information, contact Pastor Jim Todd.
- How does the model of the early church in Acts 2 inspire you to reconsider the importance of community, dedication to God’s mission, and sacrificial generosity in your own life?
- Reflecting on your current involvement in community, how can you actively seek to emulate the principles of the early church described in Acts 2:42-47, particularly in terms of fellowship, sacrificial giving, and devotion to God’s teachings?
