John Reading Plan | Week 1, Day 1

Prayer

As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.

Bible Reading: John 1:1-5

Read these verses three times slowly.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Reflection & Questions

Today begins a brand-new reading plan through the entire book of John. John’s gospel is his account of the life and work of Jesus. John’s account differs from Matthew, Mark and Luke, in that he not only recounts the events of Jesus’ ministry, but also gives the meaning behind those events. It is a great book to read and meditate on!

Like all good stories, John begins in the beginning. And like Genesis begins, “In the beginning”, so does John. Except that Genesis says, “In the beginning, God..” and John says “In the beginning was the Word..” This is no accident. John is making an incredible claim that the Word, who we will see is Jesus Christ Himself, “was with God” and “was God.” Jesus is God. The man that we are about to read about over the next several weeks as we journey through John is no ordinary man. He was not just a good teacher or a good example. He was the creator of all things (“through him all things were made”) and in fact He is the source of all life (“in him was life, that that life was the light of all mankind.”) John makes it clear from the get-go that he will not allow us to accept a lower form of Jesus or misunderstand what he is saying. John, his disciple for three years, who saw Jesus die and rise again, is claiming that this man is not just a man, He is God Himself.

      1. How does John’s claim that Jesus made everything, impact the way we should relate to Him on a daily basis?
      2. How are you hoping to grow as you read through John?
