John Reading Plan | Week 10, Day 1
Prayer
As you spend time with Jesus, allow your mind and body to settle until you feel fully present. Ask Him to help you learn more about Him today.
Bible Reading: John 15:1-4
Read these verses three times slowly.
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
Reflection & Questions
If there are three words that might define the responsibility of a disciple of Jesus, it is the words “remain in me.” Jesus emphatically states in these verses that without remaining there is no fruit. Without remaining there is no attachment to the vine. However, the responsibility does not solely fall on us. For Jesus says, He will also remain in us. It is a mutual remaining.
What does it mean to remain (or in some translations, to abide)? It obviously means that there is no leaving. For us, there is no seeking other vines, other sources of satisfaction and sustenance. However, it’s more. To remain isn’t to be satisfied with a superficial connection. It means that there is a special relationship for the disciple with Jesus. There is a determined and dedicated decision to make Jesus number 1. To pursue Him and His ways. To settle for nothing less than Him.
There are many counterfeit vines out there. Shiny objects. Promising relationships. Self-help rules of life. But only Jesus is “the true vine.” He invites to remain in Him as He remains in us.
- What word or phrase in these verses sticks out to you? Why?
- Are you pursuing Jesus as number 1? Is there something that comes to mind that needs to change in your pursuit of Him?
