John Reading Plan | Week 11, Day 2

Prayer

Give your soul a moment of silence to align with your body. Express gratitude to God for the opportunity to be with Him and invite Him to meet you at this time.

Bible Reading: John 16:7-11

Read these verses three times slowly.

But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

Reflection & Questions

As the disciples hear Jesus’ words about trouble, death and His leaving, their hearts must have been in their stomach. The last three years have been filled with adventure, amazing teaching and signs. Most of all, they were with Jesus. Now he would be gone.

However, Jesus says his leaving is very good, because he will send the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that the Holy Spirit would be a tremendous gift to the disciples. He has known the Spirit since eternity past, and in His years on earth the Spirit has been a tremendous encourager and empowerer. The disciples don’t know the Holy Spirit like this yet, but they will. They have to trust Jesus.

Tomorrow we will read what the Holy Spirit does for followers of Jesus, but today we see what He does in the world – he brings conviction of truth. He proves “the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.” The Spirit will carry on the teaching of Jesus and spread it across the entire globe, for the rest of time.
