John Reading Plan | Week 12, Day 4

Prayer

Pause for a moment of quiet and calm. To be fully present in both body and mind, inhale deeply and exhale slowly. Repeat this three times. Ask God to grant you His wisdom today.

Bible Reading: John 17:20-23

Read these verses three times slowly.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Reflection & Questions

In today’s verses, Jesus continues to pray, but HIs attention is now fully on us. We are “those who will believe in [Him] through [the disciples’] message.” Jesus’ prayer for us specifically, is that we “may be one” and that unity would be found in the unity of the Godhead. That just as the Father, Son and Spirit are one, so we would be united together. That is some very high level unity. The result of this kind of unity will be that “the world will know that [the Father] sent [Jesus].”

One obvious lesson from this prayer is the utmost seriousness that the Godhead takes in the unity of brothers and sisters in Christ. Our relationship with fellow believers is not to be taken lightly. Protecting our relationships and nurturing them should be of high value. Looking out for one another. Endeavoring to resolve differences. Showing mercy and grace. Loving in hard times. All of these and many more expressions of love and unity with each other is to be a high priority. For, as Jesus says, it is in these relationships that we will experience God at work, and it is through these relationships that the world will see God is real.
